A Jaipur chronology
The sequence records the city and workshop context without inventing a house lineage. Jaipur craft is collaborative, and the catalogue keeps those stages legible.

Jaipur is founded
Sawai Jai Singh II establishes the planned city of Jaipur. Its ordered bazaars bring specialist trades into close exchange, and Johari Bazaar becomes closely associated with gemstones and jewellery.
Historic practice
Many hands, one object
Cutters, polishers, setters, goldsmiths, engravers and enamellers develop distinct areas of bench knowledge. Kundan and meenakari demonstrate how construction and finish can move between the face and reverse of a jewel.
Contemporary bench
Hand skill meets material evidence
Modern gemological testing strengthens the record of identity and treatment. The setter still works by eye, hand and repeated inspection, adapting the mount to the individual stone.

Working principles
Each principle is paired with visible workshop evidence. They are practices, not decorative values.
Bench 01
Read the stone before drawing
Outline, depth, inclusions, treatment and wearing context inform the first setting decision.
The loose stone is viewed from face, profile and reverse before a seat or claw position is fixed.
Bench 02
Disclose what is known
Identity, natural or laboratory-grown origin, detectable treatment and geographic-origin opinion remain separate statements.
The piece record carries relevant report language and care implications in plain terms.
Bench 03
Finish the hidden surfaces
A reverse, hinge, gallery or clasp is part of the object even when it is not the first surface seen.
Edges are eased, joints are tested through their travel and settings remain accessible for inspection.
Bench 04
Build for service
Wear is expected. Good construction gives a future craftsperson a clear path to inspect, maintain and repair the piece.
Claws, links, pearl stringing and catches are checked according to the object's use, not a generic timetable.

Keep a material record
A catalogue reference connects the finished jewel with its stones, setting decisions and care note.
The record stays factual so later conversations can begin from evidence rather than memory.
